Building Sights – world premiere at Made in Manchester Festival

Building Sights – site-specific music theatre in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Royal Northern College of Music Building

by Meriel Price, world premiere at the Made in Manchester Festival

3rd – 5th May 2023, Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester

Building Sights, commissioned by the Royal Northern College of Music for the 50th anniversary of it’s building, is a work of contemporary music theatre that uses the RNCM building as it’s score. The architecture, interior design and interplay of interior and exterior spaces dictates the structure of the piece, the behaviour within these spaces the narrative.

Material for the composition is drawn from everyday sounds, actions and gestures found in and around the building. These are scored and choreographed to create subtle, immersive interactions in which the boundaries between performer and audience are blurred. Meriel worked with RNCM students to explore the potential of tipping the performer – audience balance, creating unexpected dynamics of who is the audience and who the performer, who is watching who.

This working method is currently being developed further, exploring the potential of other architectural spaces.
